Maître d' Robert-Jan Smeding

A passion for hospitality

Robert-Jan was born on 24 August 1971 in North Holland and knew early on that he wanted to work in hospitality. After hotel school he gained experience at renowned addresses, including The Grand in Amsterdam, and went on to serve as maître d' at De Componist in Haarlem and Auberge De Kieviet in Wassenaar. There he learned that hospitality is far more than good service: it is about attention, warmth and an evening people remember.

He has worked at Tante Koosje since 2006, the same year chef Roland Veldhuijzen started cooking here. The homely, warm atmosphere of the house suits him perfectly. Spoiling guests, surprising them and making sure they truly feel at home: that is where his heart lies.

For Robert-Jan, real hospitality lies in the small things: a warm welcome, personal attention, a listening ear and that little bit extra. His aim is the same every evening: not just to meet his guests' expectations, but to exceed them.

Away from the restaurant he is a father of three, and recently became a proud grandfather.
